Abby Seymour is an Australian jeweller renowned for her distinctive print mark making signature style. Her diverse designs entail detailed and intricate hand formed marks paired with bold, hard edge geometry, together reflecting a restrained and quiet simplicity that informs her cohesive brand identity. Her sensibilities are tied in respect with traditional techniques and paired with a refined and considered contemporary approach. Her jewellery is timeless and of today.
Seymour’s brand focuses on sustainability by using ethical business practices and materials with minimal impact on the environment. From initial design conception filtered through to the artists intricate marks inscribed by hand, precisely produced and then finely finished with high attention to detail. All pieces are made to last, of high quality and display top tear craftsmanship, accompanied by innovative and re-usable packaging. The processes, materials and the production are sourced and undertaken locally.
Seymour's latest collection; Australis, highlights the beauty and majesty of the Australian landscape. Handmade in her sunny Brunswick studio and a year in the planning, Australis is a celebration of our rich and timeless ecology and is her most ambitious project to date. Marrying finer textures and details with crisp lines and geometry, Australis captures the shapes, light, movement and ever-evolving forms of Australia’s natural contradictions. In two parts, Botanica and Landscapes, this collection honours both the land and the life it nurtures.
As the child of creative parents, Abby draws on memories of walking through the bush with her father, observing the sounds and the landscape around her and collecting a vast array of delicate pods and leaves. Australis combines these observations from nature with Abby’s distinctive style of thoughtful, delicate and impeccably detailed designs, and transforms them into wearable pieces in brass, sterling silver and 9K gold.
Part 1, Botanica , is a range which captures both the complexity and simplicity of Australia’s unique native flora. Each piece is an abstraction of botanical life, carefully balancing intricate organic details with understated beauty. Earrings featuring flowering gum pods, bark-textured rings, delicate wattle burst pendents and striking Maleleuca Pod bangles allow the wearer to connect with the unique offerings of our native flora.
Part 2 delivers us into Landscapes , a contemporary reflection of the diverse forms taken by Australia’s ever evolving land. Landscapes references Australia’s natural architecture and like the land itself, is simultaneously geometric and fluid; bold and delicate. In this range the pieces are richly textured and reminiscent of stone, sand and fossil surfaces with deeply etched, patterned rings, earrings, necklaces and bangles.
With a background in printmaking, ceramics, homewares and jewellery, Abby is able to instil her rich appreciation of timeless design and pattern making into each piece. The Australis collection is a love story about our natural surroundings and will be treasured by anyone who has an affinity with the Australian landscape.
Abby Seymour is stocked and represented by Craft Victoria, Heide MOMA, Jam Factory, Queensland GOMA and the National Gallery of Australia along with other selected museums and boutique stores in Australia and internationally.
